“With a diverse background in sports and professional life, Phil brings over a decade of martial arts experience to TMAP".
After many years playing rugby for clubs in the UK and Europe, Phil began training in kickboxing as a way to keep fit and recover from his injuries. As his involvement and passion for martial arts grew, he began to explore other disciplines, in particular Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). The technical and strategic nature of BJJ as a grappling art captivated him and, over time, he has committed fully to BJJ.
With previous experience coaching children’s and adult’s rugby, Phil started teaching as an assistant in both children’s and adult classes at the Martial Arts Place. He quickly developed a strong rapport with students of all ages, guiding them through techniques, and fostering in them a love for martial arts.
When the Martial Arts Place opened a dedicated full time BJJ dojo, Phil decided it was time to pursue martial arts full-time. Leaving a successful career as a Chartered Public Finance Accountant and consultant, where he worked internationally within both the public and private sectors, his goal is now to ensure that the benefits of BJJ can be experienced by all. This has recently included the development and delivery of a school programme to provide BJJ as part of the physical education and PSHE curriculum and women’s self-defence classes, in addition to his core teaching activities.
As a full-time instructor, and an active competitor in both Gi and no-Gi BJJ, Phil combines his years of training, coaching and professional experience to offer students a comprehensive BJJ education. Whether you are interested in improving your or your child’s confidence and fitness, learning self-defence techniques, exploring BJJ as a grappling art, or even competing, Phil is here to help you achieve your goals.”
